Beginning Runefinding: An Ancient Secret Alphabet of Spells

Sunday, December 8, 2024, from 1-5P

Indwelling Community Room

Investment: $125

Guides: Anna Tennis and Hilary Buckwalter-Wilde

The runes are an ancient alphabet from Northern Europe, a collection of symbolic letters nearly 2000 years old. The runes, however, are no mere alphabet. Far from the mundane letters we now associate with our own languages - each letter in the runic alphabet is also an incantation: a literal spell, full of thousands of years of meaning, mystery, and ancestral inheritance.

All are welcome: the runes are the energetic property of anyone who wishes to learn them, and the power of their use ultimately comes from deeply personally understanding and internalizing the meaning of each symbol. A cultural or ancestral background in Northern Europe is absolutely not necessary. For many of us, cultural sublimation has left us bereft of our own cultural traditions, appropriating or assimilating whatever the dominant culture foists upon us, leaving us empty, hungry, and yearning for a connection to the numinous or sublime. The runes welcome us to restore such a connection, from inside ourselves.

In this workshop, we will learn the meaning of the alphabet characters as phonetic and ideographical elements, and their possible energetic or magical uses. We’ll discuss the mythological origin of the runes - the Norse cosmology from which the runes first drew power, mystery, and meaning. We’ll explore the ways their combinations might be interpreted - in words, bindrunes, and divination, and finally, we’ll practice one introductory form of divination. Every attendee will leave with a working knowledge of runic origin, meaning, interpretation, and divination.
