Within each of us is a form of power that cannot be taken from us. It is a power that comes from within. It is a power that gives us a sense of our capacity and self-worth. Connecting with this power, particularly in times of uncertainty can be life altering, strengthening, and protective.

During this restorative winter weekend retreat, we will circle together and explore how to embrace the protective and powerful aspects of the Medusa myth as a part of knowing and embodying ourselves as whole. The tale of Medusa is one of a woman both abused and blamed through no fault of her own. But what if Gorgons are just women? Women who do not bend to the world or fit into the narrow mold society requires of them?

The idea that Medusa is a symbol of survivorship rather than a monster holds undeniable power. Perhaps a snake haired woman is a being of grace and terror, a femme fatale that is a symbol of revenge on the male gaze. Perhaps Medusa is a perfect depiction of a survivor’s journey from pain—to resilience, strength, empowerment, and self-preservation.

Perhaps those she turned to stone deserved it.

Perhaps it was a form of poetic justice.

The retreat will include storytelling and myth, writing, yoga, time in community, and ample free time to rest and explore. We will also have a massage therapist on site.

Camp Amnicon:

The lodge at Camp Amnicon has a beautiful central fireplace with seating area, small kitchen area, sauna, access to coffee and tea all day, indoor bathrooms and showers, and two bunk rooms. There are a myriad of hiking trails and access to Lake Superior and the Amnicon River—an incredible retreat destination in the heart of the South Shore wilderness.

*Private cabins may be available. Please contact Camp Amnicon directly to check availability.

The retreat cost includes breakfast, which is provided by Indwelling. For dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, please bring a potluck item. This is a beautiful way to care for each other with nourishing food and also keeps the retreat cost at a reasonable price.

*This retreat will be offered to women, women identifying individuals, and non-binary people who are comfortable in a space that centers the experience of women.
